Carve the perfect Jack-O-Lantern

Carving a Jack-O-Lantern is a great family activity and although it may look hard to do, it’s not.
Follow these simple instructions and create the perfect centrepiece to your Halloween table.
Here is what you will need:
  • A pumpkin – pick one with a bright orange exterior and a thin layer of skin. Wooloworths and Henrys Mercato staff can help you select the right one.
  • A sharp, serrated knife or pairing knife
  • Butchers paper or newspaper
  • A soup ladle or large spoon
  • Two medium bowls
  • A tea towel
  • A tealight candle or battery operated tealight if you prefer
  • A permanent marker
  Okay let's start!
  1. Find a workspace and line it with butchers’ paper or newspaper
  2. Have all of your tools within easy reach
  3. Draw your design onto the pumpkin making sure you choose the best side for the face. Use the marker to draw eyes, a nose and a toothy grin.
  4. Outline a circular lid at the top of the pumpkin.
  5. Cut out the pumpkin lid with the serrated knife. Cut along the outline you have made and cut with your knife on a 45-degree angle – this allows the lid to sit back on top without falling inside the pumpkin.
  6. Remove all the internal seeds attached to the pumpkin. Grab them with your hand and put them into one of the bowls – these can be washed and dried for another use.
  7. Use the soup ladle or a large spoon to scoop out the insides of the pumpkin, make sure there are no stringy bits remaining. Discard all the insides into the second bowl.
  8. Use the tea towel to wipe down the front of your pumpkin to make it easier to carve.
  9. Make straight cuts into your pumpkin along the lines you marked out with the marker. Try and cut on the outside of the black lines so these are not visible when you’re done.
  10. Insert a tealight candle into the pumpkin and use a long match to light it and then replace the lid.
  11. Find a spot in your home to place the pumpkin or make it the centrepiece for your Halloween dinner table!
